How to Choose a Girl's Softball Bat

Whether you're just starting in little league or competing in fast-pitch college softball games, your bat choice is extremely important. A poor choice in a girl's softball bat can significantly affect your ability to swing and connect with the ball. If you want to increase your batting average or get off on the right foot as a new softball player, take your time and do plenty of research when picking your bat.

Instructions

Choose the weight of the bat. The heavier the bat the further the ball will travel when hit, but the choice of the bat should depend on the weight of the softball player. You should only use a heavy softball bat (25 oz.) if you weigh 150 lbs. or more. If you are a smaller female (or girl) under 150 lbs., you should choose a lightweight to medium-weight bat (20-23 oz.). If your bat is too heavy it can slow down your swing.

    • 2

Choose the length of the bat. The shortest length is around 26 inches for small girls and the longest length is 34 inches. The longer the bat, the higher your chance of having the ball hit the "sweet spot," which is the largest part of the bat.

Choose between an aluminum or graphite softball bat. These are the two most commonly used types of bats in girls softball. Though graphite-lined bats are light and strong, many players still prefer aluminum because it gives you better control and speed.

    • 4

Decide on a bat taper that is ideal for your hand size and swing. The bat taper is the diameter of the handle where you hold the bat. The narrower the bat taper, the easier your wrists will rotate when you swing.

    • 5

Choose between a leather or synthetic grip around the bat handle. Both of these will give you a good, sticky grip. Some bats also come with cushioned grips for comfort.
