How to Anneal Brass

Annealing is a process used for softening the internal structure of a metal. The process involves applying heat to the metal and then rapidly cooling it to produce a softer substance. Annealing brass often plays a role in the maintaining of bullet cartridge cases. The brass comprising these cartridges hardens over time as a result of repeated firings. Annealing these casings returns them to their softness when factory fresh. Annealing brass cartridges properly maintains their accuracy and extends their life.

    • 2

Set your brass cartridges into the water standing up on their bases.

    • 3

Heat the cartridges with a flame from a propane torch. Move the torch across the exposed brass until the metal begins to glow.
