How to Shoot Clays Like a Pro

Sport shooting is a technical endeavor, and hours of practicing repetitions are required to shoot like the pros. Shooters must understand and practice fundamental techniques and train the muscle memory to respond when fast-moving clays pass in the air. Shooting ranges are the preferred practice arena, but rural residents may practice shooting in remote areas with a hand thrower. Shooting clays creates a natural drive to improve and shatter as many pigeons as possible. Advanced shooters have the opportunity to compete in regional and national events for money and other prizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Assume a comfortable stance with a straight back and your head upright. Stagger your foot position with your less-dominant foot in the lead. Use a narrow stance and lean slightly forward as if you are preparing to start a sprint.

    • 2

Hold the gun with the barrel facing the ground. Mount the butt of the gun tight against your shoulder in a swift motion, and press your cheek against the side of the stock. Practice the mounting technique numerous times to train your muscle memory.

    • 3

Keep both eyes open and look down the barrel and through the bead. The bead is designed for aiming, and it is used as a guide only.

    • 4

Swing the barrel in one smooth motion, following the target. Swing past the target and pull the trigger. Follow through to complete the full swing. Do not interrupt the swinging motion until the motion is complete. Increase or decrease the lead on the following clays until you are hitting the majority of the targets.

    • 5

Practice the mounting and swinging motions separately with an empty gun. After you are comfortable with each motion, practice them together on imaginary clays. Finally, practice as one fluid motion on live clays.
