How to Tape a Hockey Stick Like a Pro

While you can play hockey with a stick that hasn’t been taped, you’ll find you can increase your stick handling by using hockey tape. Adding tape to your stick can enhance the grip on the blade for catching the puck as well as adding texture to the handle. To tape a hockey stick like a pro only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Taping the Blade

    • 1

Pull a few inches of tape away from the roll and place it vertically against the inside curve of the hockey stick’s blade two to three inches from the shaft. Wrap the tape in a circle around the back of the blade and forward to your starting point.

    • 2

Wrap the tape in spirals, partially overlapping the previous strip and slowly bring the tape toward the end of the blade. Stop when you are an inch or two from the tip of the blade.

    • 3

Wrap the tape back toward the shaft, overlapping as you go, until you reach your starting point. Bring the tape to the back of the blade and tear it off from the roll. Push the tail of the tape down onto the blade to finish.

    Taping the Handle

    • 4

Pull a few inches of tape away from the roll and place it along the shaft of the stick six inches away from the butt end of the stick. Loop the tape around the back of the stick and bring it forward to where you started.

    • 5

Loop the tape around the handle, gradually moving up toward the butt of the stick, letting each new portion partially overlap the previous strip. Continue until you are at the top of the stick.

    • 6

Pull the roll of tape out away from the stick to make one long piece of tape about 18 inches long. With the tape still connected to the stick on one end and the roll on the other, twist the roll in circles to make the long section of tape look more like a rope.

    • 7

Wrap the rope-like tape portion in a spiral around the handle from the top of the stick to where you started taping to form finger grips along the handle. Wrap tape up the stick once more just as you did in Step 2 until you reach the top.

    • 8

Spiral the tape around the top of the stick, overlapping each layer over the previous one, to form a knob at the top of the stick. When the knob is large enough you think your hand won’t slide passed it when holding the stick, tear the tape and push it down onto the knob to finish.
