How to Size Hockey Shin Pads

Finding a full set of hockey equipment can be a predicament sometimes. You'll need one specific size of hockey skates, a different size of hockey pants and still a different size of helmet and cage. Knowing exactly what size shin pads you need to go along with the ensemble, though, is a pretty simple and straightforward process.

Put on at least one hockey skate just as you would wear it in the game to ensure the accuracy of your measurement. Some players will wear two layers of thick socks in their skate during a game, while others may go barefoot like the great Bobby Orr did in his playing days.

Take a measuring tape--preferably a cloth tailor's tape--and measure the distance from the middle of the knee cap to the top of the skate boot.

    • 3

Shop for shin guards that match the measurement you took between your knee and skate boot. The range for sizes usually runs between 8 and 17 inches. Some manufacturers may label them as youth, junior or senior and small, medium or large. These may vary by brand. Double-check the measurement of the shin pad to ensure it matches your needed size.

Try on the shin pads to ensure fit. While the pads may be the proper length, they may be too narrow to provide proper protection, especially if you have legs that are thicker than average.
