How to Tape a Hockey Stick Knob

Hockey gloves can help a player have a better grip on his or her hockey stick. When moisture accumulates on the hockey stick, however, the gloves may not prevent the stick from slipping out of your hands. Taping your hockey stick can enhance your grip and help to prevent moisture from building up along the top of your stick. By using the steps listed below, you can take a hockey stick knob and make your stick easier to hold while out on the ice.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a fresh roll of hockey tape (see Resources). This will make taping a hockey stick knob easier.

    • 2

Wrap the very top of the hockey stick. When you do this, the top portion of the tape should be at the very top of the stick. Then, wrap the tape around the stick three to four times. Do not cut the tape when you're finished.

    • 3

Extend the roll of tape so that you have about a 6- to 8-inch piece of tape. Then, start twirling the tape so that the piece of tape begins to look like string. You should twirl the strip of tape at least 20 times. Do not remove that piece of tape from the roll.

    • 4

Wrap the twirled piece of tape on the hockey stick in a downward spiral. The easiest way to do this is to hold your hockey stick in one hand and the roll of tape in the other. Then, spin the hockey stick so that the twirled piece of tape goes around the stick in a downward spiral. There should be about 1 inch of untaped hockey stick in between each spiral. Continue doing this, going down about 4 to 6 inches (based on personal preference) and then cut the piece of tape. If you used up all of the twirled tape from the previous step, you do not need to cut the tape. These "ridges" on the hockey stick will give you a greater grip on the stick.

Tape the hockey stick from the bottom of the final downward spiral of tape all the way back to the top of the hockey stick. Wrap one full circle of tape around the last downward spiral you made in the previous step. Then, work your way up the hockey stick, circling the tape around the hockey stick. The tape shouldn't overlap but there shouldn't be any untaped portion of hockey stick from the last spiral all the way to the top of the stick. Once you get back to where you started the downward spirals of twirled tape, you can wrap one more piece of tape around the very top of the hockey stick or simply cut the tape and stop there.
