How to Replace the Extractor on a Ruger 10/22

      Remove the magazine from the rifle and open the bolt to make sure no cartridge is chambered. Close bolt and disassemble the rifle to the level of routine cleaning and lubrication of interior components.

      Remove the bolt assembly by locating the bolt retaining pin on the upper receiver and sliding it aside using screwdriver or finger. Pull bolt handle to rear and lift the front of the bolt carrier block until it separates from bolt handle. Remove the separated parts from the receiver.

      Locate the extractor wing on the right side of the bolt carrier, which also houses the extractor plunger and extractor spring. Compress the plunger using dental pick, taking up tension on the spring, and the extractor will easily come out. Release the tension slowly so the spring does not fly out.

      Place the plunger back onto the spring and reinsert it into the bolt carrier. Use the dental pick to compress the spring, creating tension. Place the new extractor in the slot and release tension on the spring to hold extractor in place.

      Test proper assembly of extractor by manually moving extractor. Part is seated properly when it snaps back into place. Reassemble the rifle according to the owner's manual.
