How to Measure for Scope Rings
Attaching a scope to a rifle is relatively straightforward, but it also takes some planning and requires the attachment of several different pieces. The scope mount attaches to the rifle. The rings attach to the mount, and the rings also hold the scope in place. If the rings do not hold the scope high enough, the scope will make contact with the barrel and not attach properly to the rifle.

1
Measure the diameter of your scope. Find the thickest part of your scope. This is usually the forward-most point. Measure the thickness of this part and record your measurement.
-
2
Install a scope mount. With the mount installed, measure from the top of the barrel to the top of the mount. Subtract this number from half of the scope's diameter.
-
3
Select the proper scope rings. Measure the height of the rings, from where they attach to the mount, up to the center of the ring. It is important that you measure to the center of the ring, not the top of the ring. This measurement must me greater than the number you calculated in Step 2. If it is not, you need taller scope rings.
