How to Put a Compensator on Your Gun

Firearms work by using extremely high pressure to force a bullet down and out of a barrel. This pressure, contained in a blast of heated air, does not stop at the end of the barrel; it continues to move forward for several feet. This forces the muzzle of the firearm up and back. A compensator fits on the end of the barrel to minimize the force of the escaping gas, allowing better control for a second and subsequent shot.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the compensator of your choice. Ensure the threads on the compensator match the barrel threads on your firearm.

    • 2

Determine the type of washer that came with the compensator. A crushed-nut washer and a peel-washer perform the same service of aligning the top of the compensator with the top of the muzzle, but they do it in two different ways.

    • 3

Install the washer into the barrel; gently screw in the compensator. The crushed-nut washer will slowly give way as the compensator reaches the correct positron. Remove the compensator and washer, and then remove a layer or two of metal, if using a peel-washer. Continue until the compensator fits.

Test the firearm to ensure the compensator is acting correctly. Remove the compensator, wipe the threads with a thread-locking compound, and replace the compensator.
