Proper Storage Conditions for a Gun
-
Safety Issues
-
Safety experts recommend storing all firearms unloaded in a locked cabinet and storing ammunition in a different location, also under lock and key. These safety measures have been shown to reduce the risk of unintentional injury or suicide attempts, and are especially crucial in places where children live or visit.
Preparation for Storage
-
Before being stored, a firearm should be thoroughly dismantled and cleaned one piece at a time. Apply a light coat of gun oil, wiped dry to the touch, to all metal parts. Make sure the wood stock is dry, clean and in good repair. Rub in a light coating of high-quality, clear wood oil.
Storage
-
Store firearms uncased in a gun safe or cabinet located in a cool, dry spot. Place desiccants (moisture absorbing preparations available from many gun dealers) in the cabinet with your weapons.
