Firearm Safety for Kids
-
Adult Supervision
-
Children under the age of eighteen should never, under any circumstances shoot, load, clean or handle in any way, any firearm unless they are under the close supervision of a responsible adult.
Preparation
-
Learn how to shoot before you pickup a firearm. Make sure you read the instruction manual for the specific model of rifle or handgun you intend to shoot. Children should work with an experienced adult to learn the correct shooting and safety techniques. Attend a gun safety course, which can usually be found through the National Rifle Association or your local sportsman's club.
Safe Gun Handling
-
Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times. Never point a rifle at yourself or others. If you are on a target shooting range keep the gun pointed down range. If you are carrying the gun keep it pointed at the ground. Do not place you finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Safe Shooting
-
Know what is behind your target. Before you begin shooting check the area and make sure there is nothing that could make your ammunition ricochet. Always wear eye and ear protection.
Safe Gun Range
-
If you are target shooting, mark off a firing line which no one is allowed to cross while guns are being fired. Post a red flag to warn passers by of potential danger. Use a safe backstop to limit the possibility of a ricochet.
