The Best Compression Pants

Compression pants have become a mainstay fashion item rather than something worn solely after major surgery. Once used primarily in the medical field, sports performance researchers have discovered them. Athletes and others enjoy them for their comfort, warmth and added health benefits. Made from a a Lycra-blend, stretchable fabric that sometimes has wicking properties, they are designed to compress major muscle groups. Breathability is an important element of compression pants, while some have wind-blocking properties built in as well.
  1. Athletic Compression Pants

    • Athletes use compression shirts, socks and pants to provide support to their muscles while active. Many athletes believe that compression pants enhance their performance, and studies such as that of Stéphane Perrey, published in the May 2006 issue of the "International Journal of Sports Medicine," point to the medical benefits of compression wear. They say they help athletes in promoting blood flow, while also providing critical muscle support, possibly preventing injury. They also reportedly aid in preventing muscle fatigue. Some of the top brand manufacturers for compression pants are: Under Armour, Starter and Zensah (see Resources).

    Medical Compression Pants

    • Doctors have long used compression material to treat patients after invasive surgeries, such as varicose vein treatment or liposuction. The compression aids in promoting proper blood flow, while also supporting muscles. The medical compression pants, like the stockings, girdles and other post-operative garments, are different from the sports pants because they offer varying levels of support. In addition, they are typically worn for as much as 24 hours a day to provide the medical benefits needed. They also aren't designed with athletic use or fashion in mind, as they're typically worn under other clothing. For this reason, do not attempt to substitute athletic compression pants with medical pants. Some of the top manufacturers of medical compression pants are Skins and Procare (see Resources).

    Fashion Compression Pants

    • Compression pants have become items to wear for fashion because of their comfort, warmth and sporty look. Whether dressed for a spring walk, trip to the mall or for traveling, women enjoy compression pants underneath skirts, dresses or worn alone. Men wear compression pants with fleece tops, wind jackets or hooded sweatshirts for a sporty look. Youth also favor compression pants, and in many cases, wear them in place of sweatpants.
