Drills That Can Be Used in the Flutter Kick & How They're Done

It takes many components coming together to make a good swim stroke, and a powerful flutter kick is one of them. However, just like any other swimming technique, practice a bit to fully develop your flutter kick to the point where it is a significant asset for you in the pool.

Instructions

  1. Holding the Wall

    • 1

Position yourself next to a wall in the pool.

    • 2

Place one hand on top of the wall, with your body horizontal and away from the wall. Place your other hand approximately 18 inches down from the top of the pool, to provide support.

    • 3

Practice the flutter kick in this position. The support your hands provide will allow you to concentrate on your form, rather than on swimming.

    Vertical Swimming

    • 4

Jump in to the pool at the deep end.

    • 5

Orient yourself so that you are vertical in the pool, with your legs pointing toward the bottom.

    • 6

Hold your arms against your chest and practice your flutter kicks. The added difficulty of not using your arms will put more pressure on your kicking to keep you afloat.

    Alligator Kicking

    • 7

Jump in to the pool and begin the vertical swimming drill.

    • 8

Lean forward slowly from the vertical position, until you are moving down the length of the pool.

    • 9

Kick hard enough to keep your head above water. This is both a good drill for flutter kicks and a good benchmark.
