How to Teach Children to Float on Their Front

Teach children how to do the front float as one of the foundations of swimming skills. At this point, they should be comfortable in the water, having been conditioned to take relaxed breaths while practicing. Avoid frightening children by rushing this step and simply dunking them underwater. Be patient and use a gradual approach to encourage them. Add some fun to the swim lessons by taking frequent breaks and tempting them with rewards and prizes for each successful attempt.

Instructions

    • 1

Assume the front float position with the child's face up above the water surface. Position yourself in front of the child and spread both of your hands over the child's chest to support her body weight. Take a few steps back and allow the child to move her legs freely while keeping her body flat under water with the face up. Say "ready, set, go!" so she knows what to expect. Keep practicing until the child is comfortable with the position.

    • 2

Allow part of the child's face to submerge underwater. Continue with the same position and hold but this time allow part of the face to go under water for a few moments as you take a small step back. Bring the child back up to the surface. Say "ready, set, go!" each time to cue him in with the rhythm of the exercise. Repeat until the child is comfortable.

    • 3

Repeat step 2 but this time allow the full face to go under water for a few moments. Remember to say "ready, set, go!"

    • 4

Repeat the same exercise but this time let go of the child completely for a few moments. Say "ready, set go!" for each practice. This lesson allows them to practice independent buoyancy and to learn the front float without your support. Repeat the exercise until the child is comfortable and ready for the next swim lesson.
