Adult Swim Schools

Learning how to swim at any age can be important, not only for recreational or athletic purposes, but also for safety. Many schools and community centers across the United States offer swim classes designed especially for adults who may feel uncomfortable in all types of bodies of water. Improve your overall health and confidence by enrolling in one of your local programs.
  1. Miracle Swimming Institute

    • The Miracle Swimming Institute is unique, as the instructors first teach their adult students to conquer an irrational fear of water. This method helps students to feel comfortable and safe in the water before ever teaching the basics of swimming itself. There are varying levels of classes, from the basics which teach adults how to handle swimming in shallow water, to those who are ready for deeper waters, and even for the students who want to become expert swimmers. The institute has several locations within the United States including California, Florida, Montana, Maryland and Hawaii. Prices vary between level, location, and duration of the classes.

    YMCA

    • Check into your local YMCA. Many YMCAs around the country are host to adult swimming classes. Instructors generally offer traditional group and individual classes for a fee, which varies between YMCAs and the program you choose. The programs teach adults how to tread water, back float, dive, perform several traditional swimming strokes and/or styles, along with rescue techniques. Some YMCAs that offer adult swim lessons, as of 2011, are in Cambridge, MA, Greater Houston, TX, Columbus, OH and Albany-Berkley, CA.

    The Orca Swim School

    • The Orca Swim School is located in Renton, Washington and the program offers several levels of classes, open swim time slots, and private lessons. Classes are typically between 1.5 and 2 hours long. Adults learn to feel comfortable in all depths of water and learn various strokes that are useful for both performance and safety. Prices fluctuate depending on the class level and time slot.

    Rose Bowl Aquatics Center

    • The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center is located in Pasadena, CA and offers adult swimming classes and lessons, which are open to those 14 and older. Lessons are usually four weeks in duration, and students are asked to sign up ahead of time according to the on-line schedule. Classes are 60 minutes long and the levels range from beginner to advanced. Students are taught water confidence by learning the proper skills, such as strokes, timing and water safety. Prices vary according to level, season, and private versus group classes.
