How to Master a Swim Kick

Swimmers use a number of kicks to accompany various swimming strokes. The kicks, which differ in style, include the scissor kick, dolphin kick, frog kick and flutter kick. Among the easiest kick to master is the flutter kick, which is the typical kick for the front crawl or freestyle stroke. The flutter kick serves two important purposes: It helps to provide lift so the swimmer's body is in good position atop the water, and it helps to propel the swimmer through the water instead of slowing him down.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a kick board or the side of a pool. Holding onto one of these items allows you to focus solely on your kick and not your arm work.

    • 2

Allow your body to float up, straight out behind you with your stomach facing the bottom of the pool.

    • 3

Straighten your legs and point your toes.

    • 4
Create a small, foamy splash with your kicks.

Lift one leg above your other leg until its heel breaks through the surface of the water. Keep your toes pointed and your legs straight but not rigid.

    • 5

Plunge your raised leg into the water, and lift your other leg to a heightened position.

    • 6

Alternate your legs up and down slowly, kicking from your hips and not your knees, until you feel you mastered the technique. Your legs should remain relatively straight and your toes pointed as you kick.

    • 7

Speed your legs' movement when you're comfortable with the kick. The faster you kick, the easier it is to stay atop the water and propel yourself forward.
