How to Use Swim Paddles

Swim paddles are tools used to provide more resistance in the water when swimming or doing water aerobics. They come in a range of sizes and designs. Depending on the water activity you are doing, you should start with paddles that provide moderate resistance until you get used to them and strengthen your muscles. Just like weight training, you should gradually increase resistance over time to prevent injury.

Choose swim paddles that fit your hands without placing stress on your fingers. The paddle should fit across the palm of your hand. Start with paddles slightly larger than your hand to perfect your technique and build stamina.

Determine what the paddles will be used for. Some swimmers use paddles to improve the weaker stroke side when doing freestyle or other strokes. Other swimmers use paddles during water aerobics to provide more resistance to increase body strength through a variety of movements.

Place the gloves on your hands. You will look as if you have a duck's webbed foot on each hand. If you are trying to strengthen your weaker side during a swimming stroke, use only one paddle on the weaker hand. If you are doing water aerobics, put on both paddles to get a more intense workout.

Concentrate on form when using the paddles. When starting out, don't use the paddles too long at one time. This will help prevent cramps or injuring yourself.
