How to Use a Swim Mask

Swim masks or goggles are used to protect the eyes and nose during recreational and competitive swimming. Applying the mask is simple but creating a watertight fit can be difficult if not done correctly; therefore, it is always important to check the size and fit of the mask prior to swimming. Masks can be purchased at various retailers, and prices depend on performance requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip the goggles in water or use a mild soap, such as baby shampoo, to clean them prior to placing them on your face. This helps prevent condensation in the mask while swimming.

    • 2

Hold the mask to your face to determine if it is the right fit. If the mask has a nose cover, take a deep breathe to see if the mask attaches to your face, if so, it is the right size. If it does not, try a smaller size; the mask should be airtight and prevent water from entering while swimming.

    • 3

Push the mask over your eyes or eyes and nose and hold while using your other hand to pull the strap behind your head. The strap should be snug against your head, resting behind your ears.

    • 4

Let go of the strap carefully to avoid snapping it against your head. Adjust the strap length if the mask falls down. Once the mask is securely covering your eyes -- or eyes and nose -- then you are ready to swim.
