Types of Swim Caps

Swim caps, for both recreational and competitive swimmers have a few purposes. They protect hair from chlorine and other pool chemicals that can damage hair, keep the hair dry, make a swimmer faster and more hydrodynamic in the water and in cold water help to keep body heat in. There are many options for swim caps but there are generally four types--latex, silicone, neoprene and lycra.
  1. Latex Caps

    • Latex caps are most popular and least expensive

Latex caps are the most common type of swim cap. Made from latex rubber, the caps are stretchy enough to fit any size head. When on, they allow for smooth movement through the water. They protect the hair, keeping color-treated hair from being exposed to pool chemicals and keeping the hair dry. Most latex caps are strapless, but they can have a strap to keep them on more securely. Latex caps are often imprinted with a team logo or name and come in an endless array of colors. Children and adults alike can wear latex caps. They are the most inexpensive of swim caps.

    Silicone

    • Silicone doesn't affect people with latex or rubber allergies. Silicone does a better job than latex at keeping hair dry. Silicone caps come in different styles, and they are tighter than latex so swimmers with long hair need to find a design that fits over their hair. They are very shiny, which is appealing to many swimmers and more durable than lycra so they will last longer. Because of those qualities, they can cost upwards of three times as much as a latex cap.

    Lycra

    • Lycra caps are made of porous stretchy fabric that is not waterproof. They are designed to keep the hair off the face and goggles on the head. Many swimmers wear a lycra cap over their latex one, to have a more uniform look. Lycra caps can be designed with chin straps for a more secure fit. Lycra is sturdier than latex and can take much more abuse.

    Neoprene

    • A new addition to swim caps is the neoprene cap. Neoprene, the material that wet suits are made of, is very good at keeping water out. A neoprene cap is an excellent option for swimmers who do not want to get their hair wet at all. They come in a variety of sizes and some have a strap that wraps around the head for more security. The neoprene cap is ideal for women who have long hair or hair extensions to protect while in the water. Neoprene is an insulated material, so this type of cap is a good choice for cold water swimming.

    Cost of Caps

    • Latex caps can cost as little as $1.50 and up to $5.00 in 2010. A silicone cap generally starts in price at about $6 and goes to $15. A lycra cap costs around $7. Neoprene is the most expensive, ranging in price from $20 to $30, according to the picky-guide website.
