How to Learn Swimming Techniques

Swimming is one of the most popular aerobic exercises. Despite the hype about how good it is for our bodies, few swimmers are truly reaping the rewards of their exercise. In the UK newspaper, The Guardian, journalist Sam Ward quotes American research showing that 98 percent of recreational swimmers do not make gains in aerobic fitness. This is because of incorrect technique. Many swimmers are self-taught and never learned to swim correctly. Learning the proper swimming techniques will enable you to swim faster, further and feel the benefits afterward.

Enroll in a swimming class. If you have never been swimming before, it is worth enrolling in a beginner's group. Most pools run classes and cater for all age groups and standards.

Consider taking private lessons. If you already know how to swim, and have only limited free time in which to learn, you may benefit more from private tuition. This way, a coach will be 100 percent focused on you and what you are doing wrong.
