Facts About Saltwater Swimming Pools
-
Conversion
-
To convert, or retrofit, your existing chlorinated pool to a saltwater one, a chlorine generator conversion system is needed; this works by producing chlorine from pool salt. Chlorine generators come in two types: a brine system that holds a stored amount of salt inside the generator, and one that adds salt directly to the water. This means chlorine tablets or powder is no longer needed for pool maintenance.
Advantages
-
Saltwater does not dry out skin and hair, as chlorinated pool water often does. Saltwater pool systems actually soften the water, which makes the water feel softer on skin. The lower levels of chlorine eliminate hair and swimsuit discoloration, red, irritated eyes, and unpleasant chemical aromas.
Disadvantages
-
The costs associated with the installation of saltwater swimming pools can be high initially; however, ongoing maintenance is less costly over time. Pool salt is sold in 40-pound bags, which can be burdensome to purchase and transport.
Maintenance
-
Although there is little work involved in the upkeep of a saltwater pool, it's important to check the pH levels of the pool regularly to make sure the water balance is correct. The chlorine generator will also need periodic cleaning of mineral deposits every three to six months. Brushing down the sides of the pool, keeping the filters clean and emptying the filter baskets are also necessary for proper upkeep of a saltwater pool.
Salinity
-
The salt content required for most chlorine generators is 2,500 to 6,000 ppm in the pool, and most people can endure a salt taste threshold of 3,500 ppm. A pool that holds a threshold in the upper end might not be as enjoyable to swim in. A saltwater pool also requires uniodized pool salt, muriatic acid to reduce alkalinity and, if necessary, baking soda to increase alkalinity.
Safety
-
Saltwater swimming pools reduce algae buildup and preserve the life of the pool naturally. The consistent level of chlorine prevents an overabundance of it. The constant flow of chlorine from the generator kills chloramines, which results in less harm to your skin and eyes.
