Safety Rules for Swimming

Every summer, minds drift toward the idea of taking a cool, relaxing swim. But whether you're swimming in a pool, lake or in the ocean, safety should always be your first concern.
  1. Never Swim By Yourself

    • Always take a buddy with you when you swim. It will not only make you safer, it will be more enjoyable.

    Adult Supervision

    • All children playing in or around water should be supervised by a responsible adult. Supervising adults should be paying attention to the children at all times and not distracted by cell phones, reading or talking with another person.

Always Make Sure the Area Is Safe

    • Swimmers should avoid swimming in lakes or rivers with strong currents. Be sure there are no branches, sharp rocks or other dangerous obstacles underwater. Avoid swimming in places such as abandoned quarries where the water might be contaminated with industrial waste.

Never Mix Swimming With Drinking or Drug Use

    • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol is a factor in up to half of adolescent and adult swimming deaths.

Water Toys Are Not Life Jackets

    • Water toys such as "water wings" are not personal flotation devices and should never be used as such.
