Volleyball Safety Rules

Volleyball doesn't seem like a sport that needs a lot of safety rules. However, there are several small things you can do to prevent injuries when playing the sport.
  1. Knee Pads

    • Wearing protective equipment can prevent an injury. Knee pads should be worn at all times to protect the knees from the gym floor. They should encase the entire knee so the player is able to dive onto the gym floor without injury.

    Shoes

    • Proper shoes should also be worn. Shoes should be able to grip the gym floor without slipping. They should allow the player to make small, quick steps on the court. Cross trainer shoes are recommended and can be found at most athletic shoe stores.

    Jewelry

    • All jewelry should be removed. It can be a safety hazard, especially if you are playing at the net. Earrings, necklaces and bracelets can get caught in the net and cause injury to the player. If ear jewelry must stay in the ear (i.e. newly pierced ears), athletic tape should be put on the ear to prevent snagging.

    Proper Jumping

    • According to the article, "What You Should Know About Volleyball Safety To Make The Most Of Your Play Time" by Rebecca Blain, when spiking a volleyball, you should jump with both feet. This gives the spiker more balance when jumping, leading to less of a chance of injury. Jumping from one foot is not recommended.

    Awareness

    • There isn't a lot of physical contact in the game of volleyball. However, you must be aware of your fellow players on the court. By calling for a ball, it lets the other players know you are going to make that play. This can lead to a reduction in player collisions.
