Skating Safety Rules

Ice skating is a wonderful sport, but a crowded public session can turn into a dangerous or unpleasant experience when even one skater isn't skating thoughtfully. If everyone follows a few simple rules, the public session can be an enjoyable experience for all.
  1. Look

    • Look where you are going. This includes when you are skating backwards.

    Don't Throw Things

    • Don't throw things. The item you throw could hit another skater or land where someone will skate over it and fall.

    Safety Gear

    • Anyone who is learning to skate should wear a helmet. Knee pads and wrist guards are a good idea, too.

    Be Aware

    • Stay aware of your surroundings at all times. This means that you shouldn't talk on a cell phone while skating!

    Rink Rules

    • Obey the rink rules, which often include traveling in the same direction as other skaters; figure skating only in the center (or not at all); not making a chain of skaters; not wearing earphones; not carrying children; and not using hockey sticks or pucks.
