River Safety Rules

The water levels on a river can change quickly with excessive amounts of rain or snow. By following basic river safety rules, you can help insure your safety and the safety of those around you.
  1. Boat Safety

    • Always wear a life jacket that fits properly. Stay seated and avoid horseplay while you are in a boat.

    Swimming Safety

    • Only swim in areas that are marked for this activity. Wear protective footwear to protect your feet from glass or other debris.

    Fishing Safety

    • Know the depth of the water before you wade out. Handle your equipment with care; hooks and other equipment can cause injuries if you fall on them.

    Rafting or Kayaking Safety

    • Wear a life jacket and helmet. Know how to recognize and react to the changes in the river. Always have a first aid kit in case of emergency.

    Child Safety

    • Children should never be left unsupervised near the water. Children always need to wear a life jacket. Supervising adults should know how to perform CPR.
