How to Be a Counter Puncher in Tennis
A counter puncher is a defensive baseline player in tennis. Counter punchers are characterized by their low error rate and the ability to return every shot. Counter punchers rely on consistency. The goal is to capitalize on mistakes made by their opponents, who are likely to be playing more aggressively. Being a good counter puncher requires endurance and stamina, as well as patience. Speed and agility are also important characteristics, as you must be able to cover the court rapidly.

1
Add running to your training regimen if you have not already done so. Being a counter puncher requires endurance, so build up your running until you can run at least as long as your match will last.
-
2
Add agility drills. A simple one is to run in a zig-zag line. Place markers of any kind, even rocks will suffice, about 15 feet apart. Run to the first and touch the rock, then run to the next.

3
Practice with an opponent. Have him hit balls to you at various places on the court and work on returning them. Strive for consistent, strong returns.
