How to Hit With a Semi-Western Grip

Used by tennis pros such as Marat Safin and Svetlana Kuznetsova, the Semi-Western is a common grip with a number of benefits that include naturally applying topspin and better control on lobs and short angle shots. Like any grip it does have a downside as returning low balls can prove more of a challenge due to its naturally closed face. Still, it's a highly-recommended grip for its spin and power potential, making it ideal for any playing surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your tennis racket on a flat surface. Place your palm against the strings then slide your hand down to the handle. Turn your hand clockwise (counterclockwise for left-handers) one bevel. A bevel is one of the handle's eight sides. Grip the handle firmly once you've found the proper position.

    • 2

Stand on the court on an angle somewhere between facing straight at the net and perpendicular to the net. This open three-quarters stance is ideal. However, you won't always get to stand in this position while playing.

    • 3

Hit the ball by making contact between waist and shoulder height. Keep your head motionless to stay balanced. Do not immediately look at the ball after hitting it.

    • 4

Follow through the swing by finishing over the shoulder opposite to your swinging arm. If it feels more natural to finish more to the side than over the shoulder, go with that.
