Tennis Tournament Rules

Tennis tournaments provide a way for competitors to test and improve skill while offering a great way for fans and spectators to watch tennis in action. From novice USTA-sanctioned events, local club championships, high school regional, to professional, tournaments exist for all levels of players. Knowing some basic rules helps both players and fans enjoy the tournament process.
  1. Registration

    • Whether the tournament is for individuals or teams, everyone must register for the event. Specific rules for registration, along with qualifications for eligibility, can be gathered from the tournament director. Often, fees must be paid by a designated deadline in order to participate in the tournament.

    Match Play Format

    • Several formats exist for tournament play. Single elimination format means that once players or teams lose, they are finished with the tournament. Double elimination puts losers of the main draw into the consolation, or back draw. Players and teams have an additional opportunity to continue to advance. Round Robin formats allow all teams and players to compete against each other regardless of their win or loss record. The team or individual with the most wins is deemed the champion of that particular division.

    Tournament and Match Check-in

    • Each tournament has specific rules regarding check-in. Players are responsible for knowing procedures and rules prior to their arrival. For instance, most tournaments require players or captains to check in with the tournament staff so the staff knows who has arrived. In addition, players or captains are expected to check in with the tournament desk before each match.

    On-court Player Rules

    • Players and teams should arrive to the match on time. Penalties exist for players/teams that are only minutes late to the start of the scheduled match. Furthermore, referees can default players if they are 15 minutes late, regardless of reason.

Players should bring all items on court at the start of the match. This includes racket, water, snacks and small first-aid kit.

During match play, all players must keep emotions in check. Racket abuse, inappropriate language or gestures result in point penalties, monetary fines or even ejection from the tournament.

    Spectator Rules

    • In tennis, the fans remain quiet during points. All clapping and cheering are reserved until after points end, or during changeovers. Never are fans allowed to coach players on court, nor are they allowed to communicate directly with them. Further still, during many tournament events, movement among spectators is restricted to changeovers only.
