USTA Team Tennis Rules

The United States Tennis Association allows more than 300,000 individual players of all ages to compete in a team environment each year through team tennis events. The rules are designed to allow players of all skill levels and abilities to compete.
  1. Eligibility

    • Men and women ages 19 or older can compete in Team Tennis, with national divisions for adults, seniors (50 and older), super seniors (60 and older) and mixed (men and women).

    Format

    • Play in adult leagues features both singles and doubles matches, while seniors, super seniors and mixed leagues feature three doubles matches. Teams are made up of five to eight players, depending on the format.

    Rating

    • The USTA uses the National Tennis Rating Program to determine player ratings so teams and opponents play at similar skill levels. The USTA suggests that players who have not played in three years rate themselves, which allows players to assess their skill level based on play characteristics at each level, as determined by the USTA.

    Teams

    • Individual players who want to join a team can use tools provided by the UTSA to find a team in their area, or individual players of similar skill level can form a team and register to play with the USTA.

    Championships

    • Any teams are eligible to advance through local, sectional and national championships held by the USTA each year provided they meet all eligibility requirements as specified by the USTA.
