How to Find the Right Size Tennis Grip

Playing with a tennis racket that has the correct grip size makes a big difference on how you play and how the racket performs. A grip size too small will cause your forearm muscles to become fatigued over the course of a match because you will be squeezing too hard to hold onto the racket. A grip size too large will be harder to hold onto and the racket will turn and twist in your hand. Finding the correct size is easy to do and may make the difference between winning and losing your match.

Take the hand that you use to grip the racket and notice the creases in the palm of your hand. Most people will have three creases running across their palm.

    • 2

Lay your hand open with the palm side up on a flat surface. The fingers should be close to each other and not spread wide apart.

    • 3

Take a ruler and place the end on the middle crease of your palm. Lay the ruler so that it runs straight up your ring finger.

    • 4

Take the measurement from the middle crease to the tip of the ring finger. This will be the grip size you should use. If the measurement is a hair shy of an eight on the ruler, increase your measurement to the next largest eighth. Playing with a grip size that is a fraction larger will be better for your arm.

Check your current tennis racket's handle size with your hand measurement to see if your racket is the size you need. To do this, take a measuring tape and wrap it around the handle. If there is a difference in sizes, you will need to have the handle adjusted or you may need to purchase another racket.
