How to Deal With Cheaters on the Tennis Court

According to the Sports Network website, cheating in tennis has existed for a long time but is now "an epidemic" in the sport, particularly in the junior ranks. Administrators of tennis tournaments do not have the funds to have an umpire on every court, and many times it is up to the players to police themselves. Unfortunately, there always will be those who opt to cheat to gain a competitive edge. There are several ways to handle these cheaters.

      In some circles, players have a reputation for cheating. The Sports Network website states that the most effective way to deal with cheating is through the use of cameras. If you have someone videotape the match, you can have evidence to bring to a tournament committee.

      In a sanctioned United States Tennis Association tournament, you can request an umpire. Your request may not always be granted, but you are sending a message to your adversary that you suspect him or her of being a cheater. If you do not get an umpire, you are at least preparing the tournament officials to be ready to step in if there is any funny business.

      Cheaters may be fine taking advantage of situations when no one else is around. However, they may cave during a group confrontation. Former pro tennis player Vic Braden states that an effective way for dealing with cheaters is for many adults or juniors to confront the cheater and convey their position simultaneously.
