Role of a Tennis Captain

Taking on the responsibility of being a tennis team captain requires much contribution and effort. The role of a tennis captain is all about leadership. A captain must have the ability to deal with different personalities in times of victory and defeat as well as know how to be heard and how to build relationships with each player on the team.
  1. Motivate

    • Tennis team captains must genuinely care about the team’s success. An effective team captain is able to motivate and boost the confidence of the team before a match, celebrate the victories with the team and raise the team’s morale after defeat. A tennis team captain also fosters team bonding and camaraderie by coordinating social events, such as team outings or cookouts.

    Advise

    • While tennis team captains do not have to be the best player on the team, the captain must possess the knowledge required to give beneficial advice to the team members. This includes any information or observations on future opponents, suggestions about effective match-ups and game plan ideas for upcoming matches. Team captains must actively participate in meetings by offering insight and assisting in the decision-making.

    Handle Conflict

    • At one time or another, every team experiences conflict, setbacks and negativity within the group. This includes debilitating injuries, losing streaks, tension between players or complaints regarding the coach. A tennis team captain has the important responsibility of handling this conflict in a way that will turn the negative energy into positive motivation for the team. Effective captains know how to make players feel comfortable and at ease.

    Help with Practices

    • Tennis team captains are valuable assets during practices. This includes organizing practice warm-ups, cool-downs and stretches, as well as collecting and storing all equipment after each practice. In the event of an absent coach, the team captain is responsible for coordinating practice matches, drills and match pairing. Aside from these responsibilities, the team captain is available to fill any other role the coach deems necessary during practice.

    Other Duties

    • Other duties of the tennis team captain include recruiting players to form a proper team and recruiting an assistant or co-captain to function as the team captain when the official captain is absent. Team captains also ensure the players' memberships are current for any leagues or organizations to which the player and team belongs, as well as keep a copy of and distribute the rules and procedures for that league or organization.
