How to Forehand & Backspin in Tennis

Once you master performing a basic forehand in tennis, in which you strike the ball squarely and with little-to-no spin, add some spin to the ball. One type of offensive and defensive shot is hitting a forehand with backspin. It is called a forehand slice. When you do this, the ball crosses the net, lands on the court and bounces low, becoming a drop shot that dramatically changes the pace for your opponent. Like any other shot you attempt in tennis, practice hitting a forehand slice repeatedly in order to master it.

Grip the racket in a Continental grip, which means you position the "V" created by your thumb and forefinger on top of the handle. Balance the racket with your free hand. Hold the racket out in front of you, halfway between your shoulders and knees as you await the ball to be hit towards you.

Step back with your right foot, turning your body sideways to the net. Execute your backswing with the racket head held up higher than the path of the approaching ball. Pivot your body towards the ball and swing the racket forward with a slightly downward motion.

Strike the ball when it reaches a high point after bouncing. Strike the ball in a chopping-like motion, with the racket flat instead of angled.

Follow through the shot, traveling downward with the racket to finish low and in front of your body.
