How to Build Track Hurdles

Track hurdles are light, movable sections of fencing used to create a barrier or obstacle for competitors during foot races. They can also be used for stretching or other exercises. Depending on what they will be used for, you can find hurdles in a wide array of sizes, making purchasing a whole set quite costly. You can build your own hurdles out of inexpensive materials to suit your exact needs so that you always have them to practice when you have time.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of PVC pipe to the width that you want your hurdle to be using a power saw. This will be the horizontal bar that you jump over.

    • 2

Make the vertical posts of the hurdle by cutting two pieces to the height at which you want to hurdle to stand.

    • 3

Connect the width and height pieces together using PVC elbow connectors to make an upside down U shape. You can PVC cement them together if you want to make the connections permanent.

    • 4

Cut four pieces of pipe to half the height of the hurdle legs to make the feet. If your hurdle stands at 2 feet high, make each piece 1 foot long.

    • 5

Put a PVC T fitting onto the bottom of each of the hurdle legs in the single opening side. The horizontal length of the fittings should be parallel to each other.

    • 6

Slip one of the feet pipes into each of the T fitting openings to make the hurdle stable and sturdy. You can place pipe caps at the ends of the feet to make them smooth and closed.

    • 7

Cut more sets of pipes to create a full set of hurdles, or make slight adjustments to the height of the successive hurdles to make an increasing set.
