Look at each piece of equipment and determine what type of use it has. Distinguish poles and bars from those meant to be thrown or used on the track.

Look for track items like hurdles, starting blocks and relay batons. Hurdles are stands with a bar across meant to be jumped by runners. Starting blocks are small block wedges on which the runner puts his starting foot to help him push off when the race begins. Batons are small rods passed between racers in a team relay event.

Sort out the poles and bars. Vaulters use a pole to launch themselves into the air and over a crossbar. High jumpers also jump over a crossbar that is placed on stands that have notches to put the crossbar on so that it can be raised higher or lower.

Examine the throwing objects. There is a heavy disc for discus throwing and a round metal ball for the shot put. Something similar to a spear is used for javelin throwing.
