Track Spikes Information
-
Sprint spikes
-
Sprint spikes are made for distances up to 200 meters offering great ventilation, an aggressive spike pattern and little to no outsole for cushioning because of the short distance for this type of race. The type of spike used in these shoes depends on the surface you will be running on as well as the regulations of each individual track. It is best to check with your coach for more information on what type of spike to place into your shoes.
Proper fit is everything for this type of shoe as you want a very snug fit. It is best to wear ultra-thin socks or no socks at all to ensure a very snug but not uncomfortable fit.
Middle distance spikes
-
Middle distance spikes are made for distances up to 1,600 meters. The uppers are still very lightweight and the spike pattern is less aggressive. The outsole for this type of shoe has slightly more cushioning for the longer distances this runner will race. Spike length again is determined by the type of track and its regulations. Check with your coach for this information.
Proper fit should be snug with thin socks for protection against blisters.
Distance spikes
-
This type of spike covers distances from 800 meters to 10,000 meters. This is the most cushioned of all track spikes offering the most comfort and protection for the longer distances. The design of these shoes enables efficient strides, sure-footed responsiveness and enough bite for a strong finish.
Proper fit for distance spikes is the same as other spikes, with the only difference being the need for a moisture wick sock to prevent blisters.
Indoor track spikes
-
Indoor track spikes are well-ventilated with rubber teeth-like spikes for traction and very little to no outsole to make them ultra lightweight. They are well-ventilated to keep your feet dry and comfortable and are designed for the athlete who competes in numerous events. Indoor track spikes are designed for the hard and sometimes semi-hard track surfaces you will be running on.
Proper fit for indoor track spikes is the same as outdoor. You want a snug fit and you should wear either ultra-thin or no socks at all.
Spike plates and spikes
-
Spikes come in various sizes based on the type of track and type of activity you will be competing in. There are very specific guidelines you will need to follow for using the right spike, and it is best to consult your coach to determine the best type of spike for your shoe.
Spike plates come in smooth hard plastic for hard track surfaces, soft rubber plates for softer surfaces and angled "lifters" for runners who run on their toes. As always, it is best to try on as many pairs of track spikes as possible to ensure proper fit and to maximize your shoes' full performance potential on the track.
