How to Insert Track Spikes

Flip over your shoes. The plastic or rubber spike plate should have between four and seven holes for spikes on each shoe.

Remove the metal spikes from the bag in which they were packaged one at a time. One end of the spike is a point; the other end is flat and has ridges like a screw. Screw the flat end of first metal spike into one of the holes clockwise with your hand. The spike should screw in smoothly. If you find you need to force it, remove the spike and try again.

Apply the spike wrench when you can't tighten the spike any more by hand. The spike wrench works like a socket wrench. Place the mouth over the spike, grip the handle and turn it clockwise to secure the spike.

Repeat this procedure to insert the remainder of the spikes.
