How to Insert Track Spikes

Wearing spikes will improve your performance in almost any event in track and field. The metal spikes protruding from the bottom of the shoes provide greater traction and make it easier for you to get on your toes, providing an advantage against anyone who isn't wearing spikes. When you first purchase a pair of spikes, the metal spikes usually won't be inserted. Before wearing the shoes or using them in competition, you must screw the spikes into the spike plate.

      Flip over your shoes. The plastic or rubber spike plate should have between four and seven holes for spikes on each shoe.

      Remove the metal spikes from the bag in which they were packaged one at a time. One end of the spike is a point; the other end is flat and has ridges like a screw. Screw the flat end of first metal spike into one of the holes clockwise with your hand. The spike should screw in smoothly. If you find you need to force it, remove the spike and try again.

      Apply the spike wrench when you can't tighten the spike any more by hand. The spike wrench works like a socket wrench. Place the mouth over the spike, grip the handle and turn it clockwise to secure the spike.

      Repeat this procedure to insert the remainder of the spikes.
