How to Run Sprint Spikes

Sprint spikes are a type of running shoe used for running short distances, such as a 400-meter race. The pointed spikes are on the bottom of a lightweight shoe, providing greater traction on the track surface and allowing for greater speed. Joseph William Foster created the first known running shoes with spikes in the 19th century through a family run business that is now called Reebok.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase running shoes that are designed for sprinting at an athletic store. Check for the lightweight spikes on the shoe bottom. The spikes should be 5 to 9 millimeters in length with a pinlike appearance.

    • 2

Locate a track used for track and field events to practice running sprints, such as a local high school or college. Also, determine a training program to execute at each practice.

    • 3

Warm up with some stretching and light jogging. During the warm up, focus on technique and form. The sprint shoes are most effective when running on your toes because the spike plate is located at the toe portion of each shoe.

    • 4

Develop and practice your running routine.
