How to Compare Volleyball Shoes

Whether you're a setter or a back row player, if you're playing indoor volleyball, shoes that provide you with maneuverability, cushioning, and breathability are important features. Volleyball shoes vary widely in pricing, but look for a shoe that offers a combination of features.
  1. Maneuverability

    • Volleyball players must be able to change direction, make lateral movements and be able to take off and stop quickly. The shoe must respond to the movements and the direction of the body. Shoes designed with rubber outsoles (non-marking gum rubber outsole, enhanced rubber outsole, or built in suspension systems) provide players with enhanced flexibility and stability that help to improve traction as they connect to the court surface.

    Comfort and Cushioning

    • Volleyball shoes that provide a cushioning system will also help to absorb the shock as players make hard landings on the court. Some shoes offer a gel cushioning system or textile lining that provides a greater degree of comfort. These systems can be built in throughout the bottom of the shoe or located at the rearfoot or the forefoot of the shoe. Other shoes offer high-tech features that help to dissipate the shock consistently throughout the shoe.

    Breathability

    • Since volleyball is a physically demanding sport, that generates significant heat in the feet, the athletes rely on shoes that allow for the excess heat to quickly disperse, and help to dissipate the perspiration and the sweat.
