1
Choose the type of pole you intend to use. The three best possibilities are steel pipe, PVC pipe or pressure-treated lumber, preferably with a diameter of 4 inches. The poles have to stand at least 5 feet above the level of the ground, and will need to extend at least 3 feet beneath the surface for a strong foundation, for a total length of 11 feet. In some locations, you'll need to set the pole deeper underground to get below the frost line. Consult your local building code to determine how deep this is, and whether or not longer poles are needed.

Dig two holes 36 feet apart on opposite sides of the central line of your future volleyball court. They should be at least 3 feet deep and wide enough to allow ample space to pour concrete around the poles.

Mix concrete and pour some of it into the first hole until the pole can be stood atop the mixture with 8 feet extending above the surface. Secure the pole in the center of the hole with ropes and stakes so that it will not move while pouring the rest of the concrete. Fill the the hole halfway with concrete and let it set. Finish filling with gravel and sand. Repeat with the other pole.
