How to Build a Beach Volleyball Court in the Backyard

Creating a beach volleyball court in one's backyard is time consuming and can be expensive. Ideally, you can create a full-sized court (30 feet by 60 feet). However, most backyards do not offer that type of room, meaning that the model must be scaled down. When measuring out the area, make sure that all the sides are even. The most labor intensive part is the digging and filling in sand.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring instrument (ideally tape measure)
  • Shovel or other digging instrument
  • Sand

Instructions

  1. Measuring the playing surface

    • 1

Measure out the perimeter for the volleyball court. While a typical court is 30 feet by 60 feet, you must fit within the room you have in your backyard. Either spray paint or use string and stakes to outline the perimeter.

    • 2

Measure out to find the center and mark it. This is where the poles and net should go.

    • 3

Dig out the area inside the perimeter. The depth will vary, but should be enough so that you can place your foot comfortably in sand without hitting the bottom. This should be somewhere around a foot deep.

    • 4

Angel the edges so that the odds of someone tripping on them are decreased. Fill the pit with sand; the amount will vary depending on size and depth. Insert the two posts in the area you marked off for them.
