Regulation Size for Indoor Volleyball Court

Except for the net, a regulation indoor volleyball court has the same measurements for men's, women's and coed play. The net height for men's and coed games is a little more than 6 inches higher than for women's games.
  1. Court Area

    • A volleyball court is 30 feet long and 60 feet wide. It is divided in half lengthwise by a net that stretches across the entire width.

    Net Height

    • For women's games, the net is set at 7 feet 4 1/8 inches high. It is raised to 7 feet 11 5/8 inches for men's and coed games.

    10-Foot Line

    • A line is drawn 10 feet back from and parallel to the net on both sides. This is the "attack line" from behind which a back-row player must jump if he spikes a ball.

    Standards

    • Poles holding the net, or standards, are set 3 feet away from each side of the court, thus making the net length 36 feet (30 feet for the width of the court, plus 3 feet on each side).

    Ceiling

    • The ceiling height of an indoor court must be at least 23 feet.

    Fun Fact

    • When William Morgan organized the first volleyball game in 1895 in Holyoke, Mass., he was trying to make a tennislike game for businessmen, but something not as strenuous as tennis. He took a tennis net and stretched it across two poles and had the men pass the ball back and forth over it. The first net's height was set at 6 feet 6 inches.
