Skill levels include professional, competitive, intermediate or recreational. Figuring out what type of player you are determines the net system you should buy. Evaluate your skill level. Once you make this decision, your objective becomes clear and purchasing the right net system is the next step.

Select a style. Two basic styles of net systems exist: indoor and outdoor.
Outdoor net systems come in two forms: in-ground and portable. In-ground systems are usually installed in grass or sand. The set includes poles, boundaries, net, hardware and optional sleeves. This system can either be permanent or temporary, depending on what you need. It is usually used by high-caliber players or purchased by parks and recreation departments for their facilities.
The portable outdoor net system offers equipment for all types of players ranging from professional to recreational. This type of net system provides a customized feature in which you can select the components that come along with your net system. It provides the most flexibility for your financial means, with some offering telescoping aluminum design and power nets that allow you to adjust the tension of the net, thus providing optimal performance standards.
Indoor net systems also offer in-ground and portable equipment as well. The indoor, in-ground net systems, by far the most expensive, are used by professional, collegiate and competitive players. They come with special adjustable features and top of the line designs made of aluminum or stainless steel parts.
The indoor portable systems provide an economically savvy purchase for intermediate and recreational players. They offer the basic components needed to play volleyball on any indoor surface.

Set a budget. Once you have selected a net system type, research the various brand names. Search the Internet and read volleyball magazines to compare different manufacturers and what they offer for the net system of your choice. If you are using the net for competitive purposes, assure yourself that the net meets high school, NCAA and USVBA standards.
