How to Aim a Volleyball Bump

Bumping, which is sometimes also referred to as passing, is one of the most often used ball hitting techniques used in volleyball. It is useful in a variety of situations, although only if you can properly aim the ball. One bumping technique that is often taught, where the fingers are interlocked, is difficult to aim and can also lead to broken fingers. When bumping is done correctly, it is easy to aim the ball and hit your target.

Instructions

Put one hand out in front of you, with the palm up. Lay your other hand on the first hand, also with the palm up. The thumbs of both hands should be on top of the second palm, parallel and pointing away from you.

    • 2

Hold your forearms together in front of you. Use the surface of your forearms to impact the ball.

    • 3

Bend your legs before you impact the ball, and push up as you bump the ball, to give it a further boost. Do not swing your arms. Your arms should not rise above your waist.

Aim the ball by facing your body and forearms in the direction you want the ball to go. Also think about the angle of your forearms. if your forearms are both parallel to the ground, for instance, then this will bump the ball straight up, assuming the ball is not coming at you at too much of an angle. Your arms should be pointing toward the ground to bump, or pass, to a teammate who is on another part of the court.
