Longboard Surfing Tips
-
Cross-Stepping
-
Cross-stepping is a longboard maneuver that you can only do on a longboard, due to its length. Cross-stepping involves crossing your back foot over your front, and continuing this stepping pattern until you arrive at the front end of your board and are riding the nose. Take the steps quickly, and move as smoothly as you can. If you are not a beginner, ditch the leash or move it up your calf, so the leash does not get tangled up in the process of the cross-step. Beginners must always wear leashes on their ankles.
Fin Position
-
Your longboard has a fin, and the placement of it determines the maneuverability of the board as you are surfing. If your fin is positioned at the rear of the board, it increases overall stability, and makes it slightly harder to turn. A fin that is positioned closer to the nose of the board makes it easier to twist and turn, and creates a looser tail.
Wave Selection
-
Do not attempt to hit up the large waves as a beginner with a longboard. Longboards are suited for gentler waves, and it is not safe to take on a huge wave until you have the proper experience and training with surfing the smaller ones. Select gentle waves that are not as high. This allows you to practice important techniques, such as paddling and popping up.
Tip for Speed
-
Since longboards are not as fast and lightweight as short boards, you might be looking for a trick to make your board go faster through the waves. One way to do this is to start riding the wave at the wave's face. This puts your board up high, and gives you more speed that you can maintain as you ride down the wave.
