How to Add Flotation to Sit on Top of a Kayak

Kayak flotation devices are important in preventing a kayak from sinking when it capsizes. This will not only prevent the kayak from being lost at the bottom of a river or lake, but can also provide the kayaker with a means of buoyancy that will save his life. Adding flotation devices to kayaks is therefore a useful exercise, even if your kayak already has a flotation device built in. You can add your own simply and easily, and rest safe in the knowledge that your kayak is fully ship-shape.

Instructions

Buy a dry bag to keep your clothes and personal items in. Not only will this keep your valuable items dry, but once you have sealed the bag, it is effectively a flotation device, which will keep you bouyant once you are in the water. Dry bags can be attached to the top of a kayak, using straps and other attachments that vary from kayak to kayak.

Buy a personal flotation device. Although this is not technically for the kayak, it will provide many of the same benefits as a flotation device on your kayak. Since most modern kayaks are fitted with their own flotation device, it is important that you can float. However, if you are able to get yourself ashore, or can easily touch the bottom, a personal flotation device can easily be placed inside the upturned kayak to keep it afloat.

Add a flotation device to the ends of your kayak. These are fitted under the gunwales and are laced into the ropes at either end of your kayak. Follow the instructions on the specific brand you have bought, although using the straps provided will ensure that they do not come completely loose, which is all that you need.

Attach your flotation devices to the central pillar. Ultimately, the only concern with a flotation bag is that it detaches from the kayak after a capsizing. As long as it is attached securely to the kayak, it will work, and you can put it wherever feels comfortable to you.
