NEMA 4X represents a set of standards used in the production of certain types of electrical enclosures. An electrical enclosure is a cabinet used in electrical devices to prevent electric shock to users, to mount switches and knobs and to protect electrical equipment from environmental hazards.

NEMA 4X standardized enclosures can be used indoors or outdoors. These enclosures are rated to provide protection against environmental conditions and hazards such as rain, dirt, snow, windblown dust and hose-directed water.
Applications

NEMA 4X enclosures have applications for machinery that is exposed to water or use water or other fluids. An example of an outdoor application for a NEMA 4X enclosure would be boat dock equipment. Indoor facilities that may use NEMA 4X enclosures include breweries and dairies.
