How to Backup a Boat Trailer to the Water

Operating a vehicle with a boat trailer near the water is difficult for many newer participants and first-time boaters alike. Once your trailer is lined up, however, it is a relatively easy task that, with practice, can be accomplished quickly. Learn how to approach the water and launch your boat properly every time by learning the basic steps to operating a boat trailer.

Approach the boat ramp properly. Frustration often arises from the difficulty of using the vehicle to guide the boat into position. Place your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel so that your movements match the movement of the boat. For example, when you are in reverse, moving left with your hand will turn the wheel to the right, but the boat to the left as well. If there is a sharp turn preceding the boat ramp, start the sharp turn by turning the wheel sharply in the direction of the turn. Even out the turn by picking out a reference point in your side mirror and slowly straightening out the wheel until you reach it.

When your boat and vehicle are positioned straight on the ramp and perpendicular to the water's edge, slowly ease off the brake and allow the ramp to take your boat trailer and vehicle down to the water until the stern of the boat just begins to hang over the water.
