How to Strap a Surfboard to a Car or Van

Transporting a surfboard can be stressful if you don't know the right way to strap it to your car or van. Fortunately there are several easy ways to strap a surf board to your car that will let you breath a sigh of relief knowing that your board will be safe and sound on the ride home.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 nylon webbed cords at least 8 feet long with built-in tensioner
  • Soft towel (optional)
  • Board bag (optional)
  • Padded surf board rack

Instructions

  1. Strap a Surf Board to a Padded Rack

      Place the pads on the top of the car. Center the pads on top of the car. Run the first set of straps through the open windows of the car or van. Tighten the strap to secure the pads to the vehicle. The straps should be tight enough to prevent any movement from the rack. Check to make sure they are secured firmly.

      Place the surf board on top of the pads. Make sure that the fins are facing up,

      Tighten the second set of straps around the surf board snugly. Upon arriving to your final destination, leave the rack on the vehicle to avoid having to mount the device a second time for the trip home.

    Tying Surf Boards to Roof Racks

      Unravel the nylon cords. These will be used to secure the surf board. One will be strapped toward the back of the board and the other toward the front.

      Place your board in a board bag. This will prevent any damage that may occur along the ride.

      Place the board with the fin side facing up. The end of the board with the fin should be placed toward the front of your car.

      Feed one of the nylon cords underneath the roof racks on the front of the vehicle and then around the surf board. Pull the cord firmly but be careful not to make it too tight and damage the board.

      Check the board's stability before departing. If the board is sliding around, tighten the cords until it is secure on the roof.
