Ocean Kayak Equipment List

You'll need certain clothing and equipment to be comfortable and safe while ocean kayaking. You don't have to own your own kayak and paddle to participate in this sport, however. You can find many kayak outfitters in most coastal regions where you can rent single or tandem ocean kayaks and paddles. Plan to bring along some additional gear as well.
  1. Life Jacket

    • Ocean kayakers often refer to life jackets as "PFDs", or "Personal Flotation Devices." You can probably rent a life jacket from most kayak outfitters, but if you can't find one for rent, consider investing in one for yourself. You should not stray from shore without this essential safety precaution on board. Most life jackets also come with storage pockets for other kayaking accessories.

    Waterproof Paddling Jacket

    • You'll need a waterproof jacket to protect you from wind, rain and cool ocean breezes during sea kayak outings. Look for a jacket with sealed, reinforced seams, neoprene waistband and wrist cuffs and a hood. Look for Gore-Tex or coated Lycra products.

    Rain Pants

    • Look for coated Lycra or Gore-Tex rain pants to keep your legs dry. Neoprene waistband and ankle cuffs will help prevent water from entering the pants.

    Paddling Shoes

    • Waterproof sandals with secure Velcro straps work well for ocean kayaking and a variety of other water sports. You can also wear stretchy, compact neoprene boots designed specially for kayaking. Neoprene booties come in a variety of thicknesses to accommodate different temperatures.

    Sun Protection

    • Your skin and eyes are exposed to the sun when you go out on the water, so bring plenty of sun protection. Bring a wide-rimmed hat, UV protection sunglasses and lip balm and plenty of sunscreen, preferably with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 50.

    Dry Bags

    • Bring a few dry bags to keep important items safe from water damage. Dry bags have special seals that lock out water. Look for large duffel-style dry bags to carry bigger equipment, or compact dry bag pouches that you can wear around your neck to carry items like identification cards and wallets.

    Water Bottle

    • You'll need to stay well hydrated during long days on the water. Bring a large, durable water bottle that can hold 32 ounces or more of water.
